A plug cutter is a woodworking or joinery tool used to cut wooden plugs to fill and repair gaps in wooden items. A plug cutter cuts a tapered hole into a surface, the plug is then snapped off from the wood remaining in the hole, their tapered shape allows them to be coated with glue and pushed firmly into a hole. Wood putty can also be used but has major drawbacks. If the wood changes colour the putty will not match and when wood shrinks and grows due to moisture this will cause the putty to dislodge. A great advantage of cutting your own plugs is that you can use the same wood as the project, giving a match in colour and grain making the plug difficult to detect.These plug cutters are designed for hard and soft wood. Plugs produced by these cutters have a chamfered or bevelled edge for easy insertion and are tapered for a secure fit. This set can be re-sharpened and comes in different sizes for different types of wood. This Rolson 48598 wood plug cutter set includes standard cutters with sizes of 6, 10, 13 and 16mm. Chamfered cutters make up the other half of this 8 piece set with sizes of 13, 16, 19 and 22mm. All these cutters have fully polished 9.5mm shanks. This set makes perfect plugs and achieves a practically invisible finish when using the same timber.
