Angelica (Angelica archangelica) is a biennial plant from the Apiaceae family that is believed to be a native of Syria, and then spread to many cool European climates. The name Archangelica is believed to come from the Greek word \"arkhangelos\", the name of Angel Gabriel who according to myth revealed its use in medicine.

Angelica is widely used as a flavoring or scent. 

Angelica also has value in perfumery where dried leaves are used as potpourri mix and as hot bath scent.

Angelica is used for heartburn, intestinal gas (flatulence), loss of appetite (anorexia), arthritis, circulation problems, \"runny nose\" (respiratory catarrh), nervousness, plague, and trouble sleeping (insomnia). Angelica is also used to increase urine production, improve sex drive, stimulate the production and secretion of phlegm, and kill germs. Some people apply angelica directly to the skin for nerve pain (neuralgia), joint pain (rheumatism), and skin disorders. In combination with other herbs, angelica is also used for treating premature ejaculation.

Cultivation and Growing Information

Angelica needs deep, moist soil and dappled shade, mimicking its favorite habitat of shady stream banks and cool woodlands. Angelica is a biennial that will die after producing seed in its second year, you can let the plant self seed, or top the plants when the flower heads to prolong the life cycle of the plant for a few more years. Seeds rapidly deteriorate and should be sown fresh in the fall when they are ripe. Angelica should be harvested in early autumn.
